Members of the Global Studies program at Bishop O’Connell welcomed back class of 1981 alumna, Mary Kate Cary, for a lunch-time discussion on her career as a speechwriter and on her most recent film endeavor, 41ON41—a documentary on President George H.W. Bush, as seen through the eyes of 41 former colleagues, friends and family members.

Using clips from the film, Cary discussed the characteristics of a leader attributed to President Bush by those around him, and she had the group think about how those characteristics were manifested.

“Our students are interested in many facets of international engagement and leadership,” said program coordinator, Whitney Webb. “Ms. Cary left these students with some important pointers as they begin to think about their own futures."

Cary began her career in the newsroom before taking a job on the 1988 Bush-Quayle campaign. After the election she became one of the speechwriters serving President George H.W. Bush, where she authored over 100 domestic and international addresses. Recently, Cary has served as contributing editor and columnist at U.S. News & World Report. She continues to write speeches for corporate and political clients and serves on the advisory board of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M.

Mary Kate Cary is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she studied international relations and served as an editor at several university publications.

Find out more about her film, 41ON41, due to be released on Netflix this week, at www.41on41.com.
