Spring Music Trip to Boston

On March 25, Bishop O’Connell High School’s music ensembles headed to Boston for their annual Spring Music Trip. Eighty-one students representing the Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Orchesquad, Concert Choir, and O’Connell singers participated in a variety of events around the Boston area.

On Friday students enjoyed a tour of Freedom Trail and Salem while learning the rich history surrounding the formation of early Boston. The day was topped off by a spectacular evening performance from the renowned Blue Man Group.

On Saturday the students participated in the Rhythms International Music Festival. Each ensemble performed three pieces and received adjudication from three music professionals. Our ensembles received the following rankings: Symphonic Band – Excellent, Jazz Band – Excellent, Orchestra – Good, Concert Choir – Good, and O’Connell Singers – Superior. All of the ensembles also received wonderful feedback from the adjudicators and tips on improving their performance.

The music program would like to thank the Fine Arts Boosters for organizing the trip, Fr. Thompson and all of the chaperones, and the O'Connell administration that supported the trip.

Enjoy a few photos from the trip below:

Bishop O’Connell High School has named Colin Disch as the new head football coach. Coach Disch has spent the last three years as an assistant coach for the Knights football program, first coaching the offensive and defensive lines and most recently as the defensive coordinator.

Before coming to Bishop O’Connell, Disch served as an assistant football coach at Stonehill College in Massachusetts and St. John Fisher College in New York. He was an inside linebacker for the University of Albany football program, where he was a three-time captain, receiving All-Conference and All-American honors.

"I look forward to this great opportunity,” said Disch. “I am thankful to be a part of this school community and feel fortunate to be able to work with these young men and build them up through the game of football."

“Coach Disch has been an integral part of building our football program over the last three years,” said Athletic Director Joe Wootten. “We are confident he can lead the team to the next level.”

Head of School Joseph Vorbach added, "Colin Disch has demonstrated that he is both a superb mentor for young men and an excellent football coach with the ability to develop each individual player. He has used his talents to support our Catholic mission and we look forward to him continuing to do so as our head football coach."

Coach Disch is replacing Del Smith who is returning to Bridgewater College as defensive coordinator for the Eagles football program.

Two teams of four students from Bishop O’Connell traveled to the University of Mary Washington over the weekend to participate in a calculus tournament. They tested their math skills by competing as teams and as individuals against other high school students from across Virginia. This is the first year that Bishop O'Connell has competed at this event.

Team #1 Takes Second Place

The team competition included 12 teams from eight schools. It was conducted as a round-robin Jeopardy format, with questions that fell into four categories: Limits, Derivatives, Integrals and Grab Bag. Both O'Connell teams earned ten out of a possible 12 points in this first round to move on to the quarterfinals. In the end, O’Connell’s Team #1 (seniors Srijan Bhasin, Matthew Funkhouser and Zhen (Pearl) Luan, and junior Eunsol Kim) advanced to the finals, and finished second overall. O’Connell’s Team #2 (seniors Matthew Wisniewski and Jennifer Ternullo and juniors Yifan Shi and Jiakun Lin) finished in the top six.

O'Connell Seniors Take 1st and 2nd in Individual Competition

In the individual competition, the 48 competitors were given 30 minutes to answer 10 questions. O’Connell seniors Matthew Funkhouser and Srijan Bhasin claimed the top two spots, answering all ten questions correctly. Funkhouser edged out Bhasin for first place by finishing in the shortest amount of time.

“The competition was intense,” said Michael Bernhard, mathematics chair at Bishop O’Connell. “Our students were great ambassadors for our school and I could not be more proud of them. I am thankful to the University of Mary Washington for sponsoring this annual event which fosters a love for mathematics through healthycompetition."

The Bishop O'Connell boys tennis team won the WCAC championship today as the Knights won four out of nine championship matches.

The WCAC tennis championship is actually nine separate tournaments played over the three days. Each team has six singles seeds and three doubles seeds, and each seed plays the corresponding seeds from the other teams.

Going into the doubles championship matches, the Knights were trailing 26-25 to Gonzaga, but the #1 doubles teams of Patrick Hughes/Erick Rivas, #2 doubles team of Kevin Shepard/Luke Brinkmann and the #3 doubles team of Gianni Snidle/Shaun Freeman swept the doubles championship matches giving the Knights a convincing WCAC win.

Luke Brinkmann also added a #4 singles title, while Patrick Hughes (#1 seed), Eric Rivas (#2 seed) and Christian Kotto (#5 seed) all made it to the singles finals.

"We have been saying all year that this is our year," said Head Coach Mark Borgiasz. "We played as a team, we suffered and we rejoiced together, and at the end the we came out on top because our desire to win outweighed our fear of failure."

On April 30, members of the O'Connell community gathered before the final regular season home baseball game of the season to dedicate the baseball stadium in honor of former coach, teacher and principal, Alward V. Burch. In attendance were Burch's family members, former players and students and many friends.

Mrs. Donna Burch cut the ribbon on home plate and her grandchildren unveiled the permanent plaque nearby. O'Connell's school chaplain, Rev. Gregory Thompson blessed the field and led the group in prayer.
