O'Connell Named School of Excellence

$

Bishop O’Connell High School has been recognized by the Cardinal Newman Society as a 2014 School of Excellence. The society’s Catholic Education Honor Roll has a ten-year tradition celebrating quality Catholic education throughout the United States. Schools of Excellence are marked by the integration of Catholic identity throughout all aspects of their programs and excellence in academics.

The award comes as Bishop O’Connell completes a three-year facilities renovation project that resulted in nine new science classrooms—including a Biosafety Level-2 (BSL-2) Laboratory and equipment and materials for the Project Lead the Way engineering curriculum. This summer’s renovations also included an expanded space for academic support services.

The school offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses, covering 26 subject areas, and in 2014, 125 students were named AP scholars by College Board. The class of 2014 received more than $18.5 million in college scholarships and 62 members participated in dual credit courses that resulted in college credits from Marymount University. Another 22 members received a certificate at graduation indicating the equivalent of a ninth semester of study in the school’s Global Studies Program.

The curriculum at Bishop O’Connell includes four years of theology study for all students, and the student life is enriched by the presence of a full-time chaplain, as well as a community of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on staff and in residence.

“We strive for excellence in all we do at Bishop O'Connell and the foundation of our efforts is our Catholic identity,” said Head of School Joseph E. Vorbach. “We are honored to be recognized by the Cardinal Newman Society as a School of Excellence. This award speaks to the dedication of our faculty and staff and the commitment of our entire school community.”

This year, Bishop O’Connell was one of 71 schools nation-wide who received the honor of being named as a School of Excellence. This is less than five percent of the Catholic high schools in the United States.

“Since competition began in 2004, the Honor Roll has been a helpful tool for administrators, families and benefactors in recognizing the quality of a Catholic high school education,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. “The Honor Roll schools are a reminder that Catholic education is getting better every day—not only academically, but in the renewal of Catholic identity—and we are delighted to see the increased level of competition among the schools that participated in the program this year.”

Congratulations to Bishop O'Connell's college counselor, Dan Stabile, Ph.D., who was named as the 2014 recipient of the F. Laird Evans Outstanding Volunteer Award by the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools.

“Dr. Stabile has been a devoted volunteer since 2006, during which time he has successfully guided nearly two dozen schools through the accreditation process,” said Henry G. Cram, Ed.D., president of the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. “He is a hard working, courageous and dedicated advocate for high quality education and for preparing schools for continued growth and improvement.”

Stabile is the former Director of Navy Schools Overseas and Navy Impact Aid Schools and was the recipient of the 2009 NASA Outstanding Educator Award. Dr. Stabile is currently serving as college counselor at Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia.

He also serves as president of the National Council for the Promotion of the Italian Languages in American Schools. In 2011, he was awarded Commendatore in the Order of The Star of Italy, a title given by the President of Italy to Italians abroad and foreign who have promoted ties with Italy.

“It is my proud honor to accept the F. Laird Evans Outstanding Volunteer Award for my work with the Middle States Association,” said Stabile. “I firmly believe that the Middle States accreditation process is one of the most effective ways for schools – and most importantly students – to grow, develop, and improve with measurable results.”

Presented annually, the award recognizes a dedicated volunteer who has advanced the mission of the Middle States Association to foster continuous school improvement through accreditation so all students receive the highest quality education possible. Volunteers serve on accreditation teams that evaluate schools based on an established set of protocols and standards designed to reflect best practices in education. F. Laird Evans is the former president of the Middles States Commission on Elementary Schools and an ardent supporter of school accreditation.

The Middle States Association will formally present Stabile with the award at its bi-annual meeting in Philadelphia, Pa. on Oct. 2.

The Global Studies program at Bishop O'Connell kicked off the school year with an afternoon session with special guest speaker, Paul Singh. Singh is a 1999 graduate of Bishop O'Connell. He has founded several startup tech companies and spent some time at PBworks, AOL and Symantec. He is currently the founder of Disruption Corporation, which provides research, investment and advice in the in Crystal City. He is also a general partner of Disruption's post-seed venture capital arm, Crystal Tech Fund.

Singh shared his perspectives on the future business environment, telling the students, "The web is getting bigger and the world is getting smaller."

He shared stories of well known Internet companies to give the students perspectives on the labor force behind the scenes. In this discussion, he also reinforced a theme that our students have certainly heard before: be aware of your online identities, and realize that future employers are looking at you from that lens too. He called this "online breadcrumbs."

The school library was "standing room only" for this session, and students stayed around well beyond the formal presentation to have the opportunity to further engage with the speaker.

Read more about Singh in the April 10, 2014 edition of the Washington Post.
