THOUGHT FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL, JOSEPH VORBACH:
It was a busy week full of reminders of the great opportunities our students have and of the special efforts made to make them possible. Our inaugural "Career Knight" on Tuesday was an evening of great energy made possible by the hard work of the DJO Dad's Club and the team here at the school -- and made special by the participation of 23 alumni and nearly 50 other professional experts who shared experience and career advice with our students. The keynote presentation by Rebecca Koenig of US News and World Report (www.rebeccalkoenig.
On Wednesday evening, we were back in the auditorium for the Math (Mu Alpha Theta) and Science Honor Society induction ceremony. The 200+ inductees and their parents heard a compelling personal presentation from Mr. Frank Bauer, an aerospace scientist who worked for NASA for 36 years before establishing his own consulting firm. In the course of his remarks, he connected technological developments achieved during his time at NASA with everyday personal technology we now take for granted (like the stabilizers in your camera phone). He also talked about next steps in GPS technology that involve using it for space navigation. It was a proud moment for families to watch their students being inducted and it was made more special and memorable by Mr. Bauer's presentation.
Yesterday morning, it was a privilege for me to be with Katie Finnegan, her mom and her sister to pass out ribbons for Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Many students and faculty also wore Down Syndrome Awareness socks, custom-made for DJO for this day. And finally, #ShowUsYourSuperdance videos trended through social media throughout the week. I tried to use my effort as a way to connect some alumni and former faculty around the country to make sure they were aware of Superdance, and perhaps help build momentum for the cause as we push into the final week before Superdance 44.
