Moss never grows under their feet.

It’s summertime, and that means that Dr. Dan Stabile and his wife, Monica, are traveling somewhere fabulous and bringing back great memories along with important cultural information that they happily share with their co-workers, friends and family. This year was no exception. Their destination: Cuba!

Both Dr. and Mrs. Stabile are faculty members at Bishop O’Connell. Dan Stabile is a college counselor and Monica Stabile is a German teacher.  In late July, they traveled for eight days to Cuba as part of one of the first U.S. research delegation of educators.

“Our group was primarily focused on learning more about some of the exemplary education programs that have existed for years in Cuba,” said Dr. Stabile. “For example, in the early 1960s they successfully eradicated illiteracy, and they have continued to outscore students in all Latin American countries.”

“We also looked into their university system, which has world renowned medical and science preparation programs,” he added.

“Learning more about today’s Cuban society and their culture and art was a tremendous byproduct of our visit,” Stabile continued. “We had opportunities for many informal engagements with citizens from all walks of life.”

The Stabiles visited the University of Havana, several high schools and elementary schools, as well as a trade school and a preschool. They also had the opportunity for in-depth conversations on urban development, housing and home ownership, and economic and employment issues. In addition, they were able to spend time with several artists and visit iconic collections of modern Cuban art, that included paintings, ceramics, engravings and graphic design.

“The pride of the Cuban people in their customs and culture as well as all their contributions to the world resonate in conversations,” said Dr. Stabile.  “The Cuban heritage, art, dance, music, athletics, and folklore present a rich history and promising future for this country.”

Regarding the Catholic Faith, Dr. Stabile said,I believe that a resurgence of the Catholic Church is occurring. Pope Francis will be offering Mass at Revolutionary Square during his visit to Havana in September, and it would not surprise me if a million Cubans turn out for this event.”
