Question: Which of the following did NOT originate in France?

a) the metric system

b) French fries

c) the Statue of Liberty

The answer is b) French fries.

The metric system, as we know it, was a product of the French Revolution.

The design and construction of the Statue of Liberty were begun in France in 1875. The statue was a gift from the French to the American people as a symbol of their lasting friendship.

A century earlier, Thomas Jefferson and his enslaved chef James Hemings introduced Americans to a wide variety dishes that they'd encountered in France. Among them were fries, which actually originated in Belgium.

This information was brought to you by the O'Connell French Club and their ongoing celebration of National French Week and International Education week.
