Did you know Bishop O'Connell has a chapter of Rho Kappa--the National Social Studies Honor Society?
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, 115 juniors and seniors were inducted into Rho Kappa in front of family members and friends in an evening ceremony in the auditorium.
The purpose of Rho Kappa is to promote scholarship and to recognize academic excellence in social studies among high school students, to provide opportunities for exploration in the social studies in secondary school environments and the community, and to encourage interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the social studies.
The chapter's officers (pictured above) presided over the event:
Co-Presidents - Caitlin Donegan and Monica Pearring
Secretary - Paul Tansey
Treasurer - Benjamin Stievater
Junior Counselor - Anna Flach
Dean of Academics, Sister Catherine Hill, I.H.M., provided the keynote speech where she congratulated the new members and encouraged them to embrace the tenets of the social studies honor society, particularly to dedicate themselves to working with others to find solutions to difficult problems, asking the right questions along the way.
"Our Church teaches us that everybody is our neighbor--our brother or sister," said Sister Catherine. "This encourages each of us to learn more about cultures, people, and events. The more we know, the better equipped we are to influence important decision making in our neighborhood and around the world."
