Arlington National Cemetery
Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013

Early last Saturday morning, a group of students from Bishop O’Connell headed to Arlington National Cemetery to participate in the annual Christmas wreath laying event in conjunction with the Wreaths Across America program. At the cemetery, they were joined by hundreds of other volunteers who first came together at an opening ceremony where they learned more about the history of the project. Then they fanned out in groups to help unload the wreaths from semi-trailer trucks and to lay them in designated quadrants all across the cemetery.

For the third year in a row, the boys soccer team was represented in the O’Connell contingent. In addition, Christian Service Coordinator, Mannikka Heard, was joined by chaperones, Colleen Stablein, and T.J. and Sue Fitzpatrick.

For some participants, this day of service had special significance.

“I felt proud to be part of a large group that endured the cold in order to pay our respects to our fallen soldiers,” said one O’Connell student. “Arlington National Cemetery always makes me think about how each and every person buried there has a story behind them.”

Many in the group plan to finish the project by returning in January to help pick up the wreaths.

Operation Homefront
Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013

On Sunday December 15, another group of students headed to Lorton to support Operation Homefront at the local Moose Lodge. Their mission was to provide a joyous holiday celebration for families in need whose loved ones are serving in the military. Our students started out the day by dressing in Santa hats and elf costumes before they helped organize the toys that were donated earlier in the month. Once the families arrived, the group helped with crafts and activities and kept a festive atmosphere as the children waited to see Santa.

“This was my second year supporting this project,” said one O’Connell student. “were able to make a lot of people smile and ultimately helped complete a child’s Christmas.”

In the end, more than 750 children enjoyed this special afternoon.

Former members of the Bishop O'Connell Knights hockey team took the ice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington on the day after Christmas for a friendly Blue vs. White alumni ice hockey game. After three periods of hard-fought no-check hockey, the blue team, which was made up of the most recent alumni, emerged victorious. The final score was 10-4.

Win or lose, the players enthusiastically embraced the evening’s events, recounting hockey memories from the past and lingered long after the final horn sounded.

“We had a fantastic turnout both in the stands and on the ice,” said Head Coach Flip Collins. “Having such a strong and supportive alumni group is important to our hockey program. I can’t wait until next year!”

The blue team was led in scoring by Jon Hannums ‘08 and Alex Guerere ‘11. They were backed up by team captain, Max Heimerman ’07, Anthony Olivette ’12, Matt Coit ’09, Chris Clark ’11, Nick Guerere ’09, Clay Koch ’13, Gray McLaughlin ’10, Boomer Malanchuk ’09, and Robert Klein ’85. Goalies for this team were Jeff Petroski ‘09 and Doug Page ’09. Jeremy Paul ’09 provided important bench support for this team.

The white team was led by captain Ricky Rudolph ’05. His teammates included Danny Bessette ’02, Michael Willis ’06, Michael Connell ’03, Sean Coit ’05, Dante Schiavo ’01, Alex Avdioukhin ’01, Steve Pfister ‘04, Brandon Fay ’05, Rich Hardy ’02, Mike O’Brien ’04, Dan Connell ‘06 and Jeff Donovan ’06. Goaltending duites  for this team were handled by Jon West ’05 and Sean Moran ’01.

Plans are already in place for the 2014 edition of the alumni hockey game. If you would like to be included in upcoming alumni hockey events, please contact Coach Collins at fcollins@bishopoconnell.org.

Student Celebrates His New Family

Freshman Dalontae Wilkinson walks through the halls of Bishop O’Connell with a pleasant smile on his face. Those who might not know him, think he’s just another happy guy. But, he’s more than just another happy guy.

In late November, after ten years in foster care, Dalontae was officially adopted into the family of his mentor and tutor, Kevin Wilkinson. The ceremony took place during the annual D.C. Adoption Day at the city courthouse. For Dalontae, this day brought him a blessing that most of his classmates might take for granted on a daily basis.

“I am glad I have a family that loves me and cares for me,” he told the Washington Post.

Read more about his story in the Washington Post.

Watch a video from the ceremony from NBC4.

It is indeed a Happy New Year!

The French division of World Languages currently seeks host families for students from France. The high schoolers will visit Bishop O'Connell in fall 2014. This is part of the continuing relationship between DJO and our partner school in France's Champagne Region. Welcoming families help the students become immersed in the English language and American culture. An expression of interest does not guarantee selection as a host family, as there is an application process, but participants benefit tremendously from interacting with these eager young people. If this interests you, talk it over with your family and see Mr. Hobson in Room 311. DJO parents and guardians may reach him at shobson@bishopoconnell.org .

All library books that were due before Christmas vacation must be returned before you may take your mid-term exams. Your teachers have a list of students that have not cleared up library obligations. This also includes any outstanding fines.
