Coast Guard Social Media Officer Visits with Global Studies Students

Students in the Global Studies program at Bishop O’Connell participated in a discussion on the effective use of social media in recent U.S. Coast Guard efforts.

Lt. Stephanie M. Young, United States Coast Guard, gave a multi-media presentation that focused on several important events, including the preparations and rescue operations during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. She is a social media officer in the Coast Guard Office of Public Affairs in Washington, D.C. and is the lead content editor on the four-person social media team. She has also written extensively on this subject.

Lt. Young shared her thoughts about the changes that YouTube, Flicker, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have brought to the way that the Coast Guard is able to communicate with citizens before, during and after storms and incidents. As an example, she showed the YouTube video of the rescue of the crew of the H.M.S. Bounty during the hurricane off the coast of North Carolina. Not long after the incident, the video had well over one million views and helped tell a very true and compelling story, touching a much larger portion of the population than ever reached through traditional methods.

“Our students are resident users of social media applications,” said Global Studies coordinator, Whitney Webb, “This presentation showed them a window into how organizations like the Coast Guard are harnessing the advantages of this media to more effectively reach their community.”

Members of the Bishop O'Connell club, "Game Design with Girls In Mind," recently attended the STEM+Women Conference at George Mason University in Fairfax. Technology teacher, Terese Scott, accompanied three juniors, Daniela Rutherford, Eva Wittkoski and Anna Bourque, and one sophomore, Alyson Speier.

The one-day conference was filled with learning opportunities. The keynote speakers were the Honorable Karen Jackson, Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Dr. Megan Healy, Virginia Director of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). In addition, the students participated in small-group mentoring sessions Jenny Gaskill, a manager at AT&T; Dr. Anika Lalmansingh, a scientific consultant as well as a Steering Committee member of Girls in Technology (GIT); Nancy Lamberton, leadership coach and VP Mentoring Solutions for The Nebo Company; and Dr. Kristina Nasr, a manager at comScore Inc.

One of the many highlights of the day's activities was the opportunity to network with game design students and faculty of George Mason University. The GMU students discussed the school's program and invited our students to actively participate in a firefighting training simulation game they were developing at Little Arms Studios, a game-creation company based in Vienna, Va.

"Throughout the course of the conferense, our students were able to have great conversations with wonderful mentors from different areas of the technology industry,"said Scott. "They enjoyed talking about their own plans and listening to the remarkable mentors talk about their paths in life. We were especially honored to have one of the keynote speakers, Dr. Healy, join our table during a mentoring session."

Remembering Sister Michel Marie

It is with heavy hearts that the O’Connell community shares the news that Sister Michel Marie Graham, I.H.M.passed away on March 29, 2014, at the age of 87.

Sister Michel Marie taught English at O’Connell from 1959 to 1979, sharing her love of literature, writing, and learning with hundreds of O’Connell students. As a teacher, advisor, colleague, and department head, Sister Michele was admired and respected throughout the O’Connell community.

Sister Michel Marie was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Falls Church, Va., a short distance from the dairy farm that would eventually make way for Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School. She graduated from American University in 1947 and joined the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary a year later. Sister Michele came to O’Connell to teach English in the girls’ division in 1959, and quickly became moderator for the first issue of the school's newspaper, The Visor. She was highly regarded English teacher who later served as department chair.

Sister Michel was a supportive and enthusiastic member of the greater school community, frequently attending sports and other events throughout the year. Bill Carpenter ’76 remembers how Sister Michele Marie came to all the home wrestling matches. “She was a fan of the classics,” said Bill, “and tried to impress upon us that both body and mind needed to be developed.”

As word of her passing spread on social media, former students fondly recalled her excellence in teaching, along with her intelligence, wit, and patience. She inspired many students to further study in English, and others recalled how much her writing instruction aided them in college and graduate school. Sister Michele Marie was one of those O’Connell teachers who will never be forgotten.

Religious, relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Camilla Hall in Immaculata, Pa. Visitation will held from 8:30-10:15 a.m. directly preceding the Mass.

Let us continue to offer our prayers for Sister Michele Marie and in thanksgiving to God for the gift of her life which she shared with our community so generously.
